The California esthetician written exam is administered by PSI on behalf of the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC). The exam consists of 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest items and must be completed in 90 minutes. A score of 70% or higher is required to pass. As of January 1, 2022, the practical exam is no longer required — the written exam is the only requirement for licensure. To qualify, you must complete 600 hours of training at a BBC-approved esthetics school. Under SB 803 (effective January 1, 2022), California expanded the esthetician scope to include lash and brow lamination/perming and dermaplaning. The exam covers infection control and safety (32%), skin analysis and client consultation (20%), skin care services (25%), hair removal (8%), and California BBC laws (15%).

Three content areas generate the most missed questions on the California esthetician exam. First, skin analysis — specifically the Fitzpatrick skin type scale (Types I–VI, their burn/tan characteristics, and how to select treatment protocols), transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and barrier function, and distinguishing between dry, dehydrated, oily, combination, and sensitive skin at a clinical level. Second, facial treatment contraindications — knowing precisely which conditions and medications (Retin-A, Accutane, active herpes simplex, recent chemical peels) require modified or refused services. Third, equipment and modality knowledge — how galvanic current works (iontophoresis vs desincrustation), what high-frequency ozone does, how microdermabrasion differs from chemical exfoliation. The BBC tests the science behind each technique, not just the procedural steps.

No. Retin-A (tretinoin) thins the epidermis, making skin extremely fragile. Waxing over Retin-A-treated areas can lift skin layers along with the hair, causing severe damage. This is a standard contraindication.
A cosmetologist (1,000-hour program) is licensed to perform hair, chemical, basic nail, and skin services. An esthetician (600-hour program) specializes in skin care, facials, and hair removal but cannot perform hair cutting, chemical hair services, or full nail services.
